Will Mayor Kilpatrick Flap Impact Obama?

Posted in Uncategorized by groffellison on August 8, 2008

While Motor City’s Mayor deals with jail and his own personal pathological issues, the question above is worth asking – or, at least, looking into.  Detroit is the largest city in Michigan, one of six states identified as coveted “battleground” states in the Presidential election.  Recent polling already has the race as tight between Obama and McCain: averages show Obama ahead by only +4.3%.  That’s tight.

How does Mayor Kilpatrick’s legal turned jailhouse troubles impact Obama?

For one, White voters throughout Michigan are being exposed to the rather ugly downfall of a once promising African American politician running their biggest and most critical city.  The negative press and vibe surrounding this scandal could potentially rub off on Obama efforts in Michigan if there are uninformed White voters – particularly in that working class bracket we keep talking about – who decide to make a connection between Obama and every other Black politician in the state, including Kilpatrick.  Plus, there are those who might make comparisons: both young, fast rising Black politicians with the gift of rhetorical presence and populist appeal.

We’ll watch Michigan closely.

I think this issue cuts across party lines. We’re done with him.
