THE GROFF/ELLISON POLITICAL REPORT

OK, Enough is Enough

The mayor of Detroit is in jail.

The Honorable Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor of the city of Detroit was remanded to Wayne County jail this morning for violated a court order that he not leave town.  Kilpatrick, allegedly on city business, made the short trip to Windsor, Ontario, Canada to try and save a deal surrounding a tunnel from Motown to Windsor.

The Mayor, who is under eight felon indictments and who is being investigated by state authorities for shoving a Sheriff, will spend the night in jail after an immediate request for appeal was postponed until tomorrow morning.

This is the latest twist in a bizarre case that began with the Mayor and his then Chief of Staff Christine Beatty were charged with lying under oath about the firing of a police official, but it was during that time that erotic, romantic and raunchy text messages were discovered between the two that exploded on the scene.  Since then it has been all down hill for the man they call the ‘Hip Hop Mayor.”

In February the City Council tried to oust him but couldn’t, this week his mother Congresswomen Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick narrowly won a hard fought three way primary (and may face a write in campaign from one of the opponents), more texts are surfacing between him and a stripper who winds up dead, the Governor has been asked by the City Council to remove him from office for misconduct and by the way the city has a $300 million dollar deficit.

We think it’s time for Mayor Kilpatrick to resign and deal with his legal and personal issues that have him in county jail.  The city is suffering economically, image wise and needs new leadership which he can’t provide from jail, prison (he faces up to 15 years in prison) or even with an ankle bracelet.  The city clearly needs a new beginning, a new vision and a new Mayor.  Kwame Kilpatrick deserves his day in court, and that may come sooner rather than later since he waived his preliminary hearing and wants to go directly to trial, but while he steadfastly denies any wrongdoing the city is deteriorating and any good work that he did do is now suffering behind this law and order real life drama.

A drama that nearly cost his mother her congressional seat, and still might if the write in rumors are true, is making Detroit, a great city, a laughingstock.  It is time he put the city and his family ahead of the himself for a change and resign with what shreads of diginity he has remaining.  That would be best for everyone.  If he doesn’t the Governor probably will and the then all the dignity is gone.
