THE GROFF/ELLISON POLITICAL REPORT

Thanks Son

On the day when Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI) woke up ready to battle for her seat in Congress she awoke to headlines bashing her son, embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who refused to talked to state Troopers about his shoving an officer and how his attorney said a local paper didn’t have standing to obtain texts the Mayor sent to a stripper who ended up dead.

Just what you wanted to see on the day you are involved in a three way primary where the issue of the race wasn’t your stances on policy, your response to constituents but the acts of your son and his eight felony counts.

As the returns began to roll in it looked early on as if the Son had cost the Mom her congressional seat, but Cheeks Kilpatrick came roaring back to reclaim her seat by a slim margin over state Representative Mary Waters 39% to 36%.  Another state Representative, Martha Scott finished third with 24.9%.  The six term incumbent won by 1,700 votes and should coast to victory in the fall in the heavily Democratic 13th congressional district where she will face Republican Edward Gubics.

But both Kilpatricks have to be concerned that while in victory 61% voted against the incumbent Congresswomen which has to be seen as a major vote of no confidence in the Mayor.

In another interesting primary last night former state legislator Jim Martin beat DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate to oppose Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss.  Jones, who won the primary race in July but fell short of the required 50% forcing yesterday’s runoff, ran ads and had campaign literature that featured presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

While that’s fine if Obama agrees to it…oops…apparently he didn’t and it got to the point where the Obama campaign was concerned about potentially sharing the stage with Jones in the fall.  The Obama campaign has targeted the state, and while he may not win Georgia polls show that Obama can make it competitive and force GOP presumptive nominee Sen. John McCain to spend money and time.

Well that concern is over as Jones conceded to Martin around 8pm mountian time with results showing him down 20 points with 90% of the precincts reporting.
