Dealing with the Hip Hop Mayor

One thing Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, won’t have to do is figure out how to deal with a popular mayor among a much needed demographic who is carry eight felonies and was recently booed off stage celebrating the city’s Stanley Cup champions.

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democrats presumptive standard bearer, will have to deal with the above mentioned mayor of such baggage.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who just recently announced his support of Obama,  is under indictment and dealing with the City Council trying to remove him from office still remains popular with African Americans.  Obama will visit Detroit for the first time as a presidential candidate tomorrow and it will be interesting to see if Kilpatrick and Obama appear together.  Our guess is not, but there are two events a public rally and a private fundraiser.  Kilpatrick, who must know his is toxic at the highest levels, has said he won’t attend the rally…but said nothing about the fundraiser.

Kilpatrick, a political scion, has to know how damaging even an appearance or rumored appearance at the funder would be to the Obama campaign and would make himself scarce to avoid the embarrassment and head to Windsor, Ontario for the day (if he can leave the country).  But then again this is a guy who has struggled with discreetness.  Time will tell if the wounded Mayor will show some discretion and stay hidden during the Obama visit or puts himself in the limelight and uses the Obama visit as an act of defiance and or to resurrect his political career.

With the polls showing Obama and McCain locked in an epic battle for Michigan any misstep or bad publicity could cost a candidate the state’s 17 electoral votes.

We, along with McCain and others who will pounce, will wait and see what Kilpatrick decides to do.
