Law and Order Day …

Day after the historic nomination of Sen. Obama, two strange happenings that many conspiracy theorists are sure to comment on as conveniently timed:

– Obama supporter and political fundraiser Antonin Rezko is convicted on 16 of 24 counts in an influence peddling scandal, AP reports.  This may not hurt Obama all that much, but it certainly makes his quest for the White House rather problematic – essentially, he can’t gain anything by his past connections with Rezko and reporters are sure to dig.  Republicans will raise it as Whitewater Part II.

AP reports:   A brother, sister and niece of indicted U.S. Rep. William Jefferson were charged Wednesday with pocketing more than $600,000 in state and federal grant money intended for charitable and educational projects.

A federal grand jury indicted New Orleans tax assessor Betty Jefferson, her brother, Mose Jefferson, and her daughter, Angela Coleman, on charges that include federal program fraud, identity theft and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said the family members used several non-profit and for-profit companies to obtain grants designed to help pregnant teens, at-risk youths and others in need of assistance. They allegedly deposited some of the grant money into personal checking accounts and used it for personal expenses.

Jefferson, as all know, is the shamed yet defiant Congressional Black Caucus Member who is in perpetual lame duck status while battling a federal indictment of his own.  He’s up for re-election this Fall.  We couldn’t help but point out the symbolism of this – rise of new school Black politician contrasted by the literal fall of old school Black politician.  The corruption aspect is a bit disturbing, as Jefferson stands in a line of high profile African American elected officials involved in recent scandals.
