THE GROFF/ELLISON POLITICAL REPORT

Despite (Early) Loss Obama Claims Milestone

Posted in Uncategorized by groffellison on May 21, 2008

With 50 minutes left before the “polls” closed in Oregon and after getting thumped in Kentucky, Illinois Senator Barack Obama stood before thousands in Des Monies, Iowa and claimed a majority of the pledged delegates in the race for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States of America.

Obama, who lost to Sen. Hillary Clinton in Kentucky by 35 points, claimed at least 14 delegates in the Bluegrass State to give him “1,627 of the 3,253 pledged delegates” according to CNN.  Obama, first congratulating Clinton for “shattering myths and breaking barriers and changing the world for my daughters,” launched into an a fall election type attack on presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain.  Obama has in the last several weeks pivoted toward the fall election but tonight he made the change very clearly as he now “…within reach of the nomination…”  In fact so close, probably within 70 or so delegates from the new magic number of 2026 that he may actually gain the nomination outright within the next couple of weeks.

With that line drawn in the sand Sen. Clinton has a choice she can continue to “allow each state to vote” and continue caustic attacks on the stump or she can continue to “allow each state to vote” and begin the process of healing the party.  If she continues on the attack and Obama can’t heal the party or her attacks assist McCain in a very close election defeat of Obama, blood will be on her hands and legacy and whatever she wants to do politically from 2008 on will be forever defined by her role in the 2008 Democratic race for president.
